From the Planet Money podcast, they talked to an actual Socialist Economist. And it was more than a little disheartening to hear so many of the same thoughts I'd had about things there from an accredited academic.

That socialism ISN'T antithesis to democracy, like the whacko fringe of the Retardican party would have everyone believe. That capitalism, particularly the way it's put in place here, works AGAINST society and against most people. That the few making the decisions make them without much or any input from those that are directly affected by those decisions (Board of Directors making decisions that a line worker might not 'want' but is stuck dealing with). That simple things like denying government healthcare insurance or full control has unmeasurable ripple effects through the society and economy (simple things like a cold/flu spreading from one person that can't afford or chooses not to see a Dr./get better, that spreads out and out in unpredictable and unmeasurable vectors and patterns). That hardcore socialism ISN'T government running everything, it's the PEOPLE running everything. In a true social democracy, it would be the same thing, but the one doesn't require the other.
