Well, I definitely approve of public schooling. However, having been sent to a Catholic school from 1-8th grades, I can also say that when I went to public school for High School in CO after we moved, the curriculum for public was about 18 months behind what I'd done in private. It was actually rather pathetic, to me, to see how lagged it was. As well as how simplistic the testing was, and all the means of verifying things learned. It was quite a rude awakening at the time to see just how sad the education infrastructure was/is. I'm all for public education, but I'm also all for parity among the types of education. Funding for education (primary, secondary, and extended), health and domestic safety should never, ever be an issue. It's no wonder the Religious Nutballery in this country continues to thrive when they help knowingly dumb down the curriculum in public education, and then encourage their membership to dumb down their kids further with home schooling.

When I have one, spending some time with my dog. Overall, though, plotting the overthrow and destruction of all organized religion and corporate controls over governments globally.

Was what I was reading for humor value (some of it is quite entertaining), and I found the Serenity Character online quiz. Amusing sidenote, Nathan apparently tested as Kaley.

I just tried sending Nathan a message on MySpace (not Facebook like I mentioned earlier). Predictably, he's got his messaging locked to friends-only. So, for now, here's the letter I tried to send him in the hopes that eventually I'll be able to contact him more directly.

Subject: Thanks

Nathan,

I'm sure you get this all the time. But I wanted to thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for your gifts to us in the form of your performances. I just watched Outing Riley. Being gay myself (though without any siblings) and being raised a Catholic as well, the movie definitely sparked some chords and feelings in me. I realize you neither wrote nor were one of the creative forces behind the movie. However, I've loved seeing you perform since Firefly (I hate to sound like a snob but I was one of the few that LOVED that show when it was airing for real before mental deficiency struck for cancellation), and you bring a reality to the screen that many performers simply can't match. I just wanted to thank you for your efforts, and for taking this role. It was very refreshing to see a more human portrayal of what family and friends have to go through when their 'world gets shattered' by someone coming out to them.

Between you and I, I do hope one day to actually meet you for drinks and hanging out around the town up here in Portland/Seattle if you're up here, and I have enough money to make it a great night out. I think it would be quite something to know you outside the glamour and glitz of Hollywood.

I hope your Labor Day was amazingly relaxing as well.

Marcus
