While commuting to work this morning, I came across the following imagery from the Washington state Drivers Licensing Manual.

(It's under the misconceptions people have regarding seat belts and whether they're effective or not in accidents.)

"At slow speeds I can brace myself." Wrong. Even at 25 mph, the force of a head-on collision is the same as pedaling a bicycle full-speed into a brick wall or driving off a three-story building onto the sidewalk. No one can brace for that.

I wish people who think they don't need a seat belt for whatever reason would do that first one. A lot. Save us all a lot of hassles on the roads, and in the movies and such.

Buckle Up.

I've had the misfortune of being in the back seat and not wearing a seat belt (they were inaccessible) when the driver lost control of the car. At a relatively low speed, too. I can say from personal experience it is all kinds of Not Fun getting thrown around the back of a vehicle when it's swerving all over the road and not being able to do anything about it.
