We went to see something today that looked fairly alright on the previews,
but I was holding a big disappointment in reserve. Just in case, and all
that. And man was that side of me completely disappointed.

The staging was weak, but what could one expect - it IS a family production
after all. The acting was completely overwrought and over-baked. But, again,
what could you expect. These are essentially pantomime performers, trying to
get their rather silly acting performance done for the kiddies in the
nosebleeds. And, of course having truly front row seats didn't help their
exaggerated facial expressions and such. (I most highly recommend this one,
if you can get them. I did a pre-purchase on Ticketmaster.com, and I
managed to land special-purpose tickets that had been returned for lack of
use. We were about 2 feet back from the edge of the ice, just about dead
center. Truly good fortune, sure, but there was no better seat in the
house, and I strongly suggest such. You can pretty much make out every
airbrushed detail on Tarzan's tights.)

But, my ghods. The costuming. If ANYone has ANY desire to see some rather
sleek and toned men zipping about in fursuits (full and partials), then you
really MUST go see this. And, don't skimp out on it. See it at the $50
ticket levels. Bagheera was ... amazing. So ... sleek and panther-like,
really. Young Simba a very close second, with his velvety outfit.... Older
Simba, and some of King Louis' subjects, definitely in a tie for third. For
the 'pure humans', Tarzan and Mowgli were not so very bad at all. Rather
sleekly muscled and defined in that skater sort of way, and looking quite
lovely in their skating tights only, which were flesh-toned as well, just
for an added layer of delight.

Oh, yeah, and if you're straight, there were many, many femmes in similar
outfits essentially baring all.

If you get the chance, either while it's here at the Cow Palace, or when it
arrives in your neck of the woods, and you enjoy spandex/furry outfits, go
see the latest Disney on Ice. I never, ever thought I'd recommend such, but
it is worth every penny for the expensive seats.

And Bagheera (from the 3/2/02 performance, @3:30PM), if you read this by
some minor miracle, please know that you did one hell of a job out there,
and we'd very much like to get to know you much, much better.
