Bones, Season 3 ep 3
2007-Oct-15, Monday 07:53 amWow.
I have never been more insulted by a show.
Pony play was more a caricature than more legitimate exploration of the desires and fetish. Hypnosis was treated as a parlor game rather than a tool of transformation and discovery until it was time to actually do it and even then they played much more to the notions that it's really just all bullshit. Erotica in general was pissed on thoroughly by the disdain of a 'normal' investigator. It floors me that these shows are on television not to educate, but to titillate the ancient fears and prejudices of hypnosis and ponyplay/RP. I guess it shouldn't shock me at all, given that the show is on Fox who is becoming more and more known for their Neocon slant.
"Roleplaying, fetishism, it's all crappy sex. At least compared to the real thing."
Wow. Both insulting and pathetic, since he's clearly never had, nor ever will have sex that transcends just simple thrusting and jerking. The connection he claims to be advocating is only available to people who TRULY know themselves and can truly share themselves with the other.
The only perk to that entire farce was that at least some of the ponies were damn fine in their gear.

on 2007-Oct-15, Monday 04:50 pm (UTC)Anyway. Fetishism has a couple of roles from a psychological standpoint. The chief one isn't too flattering. Fetishism is considered a fixation designed to handle overwhelming emotions the brain is otherwise incapable of handling. This crops up a lot in abuse victims, which is why Furry, and most fetish subcultures are inundated with crazy, thus resulting in the famous law, "Don't stick your dick in crazy". The point of fetishism in a relationship, in this context at least, is to detract from the 'intimate' connection between people.
On the flip side of things, there's Something Else. Even in the crazy and abuse, fetishism is tied into the deep structures of the brain. The deep stuff, the good stuff. The basal ganglia, the limbic system, the NAcc. The parts of beautiful and basal function. Roleplaying and fetishm are the opposite of crappy sex. It's the far extreme from physiological and emotional arousal. It's arousal that can reach into the deepest levels of the brain and stir the things that live there.
And I've got to go now. more in a bit.
