While watching the BBC documentary from the Empires series, "Greeks: Crucible of Civilization" they stated initially that in the absence of modern diversions, the only way to remember history was through poems and the like.  And that traveling poets were sometimes attributed to have over 10,000 poems memorized.

Does the computer revolution hasten our demise, as a social culture, because of ease of recording thought and idea electronically and pulling it and others up, thus permitting the mind to lose those thoughts even more rapidly than it had before?

Right now computers hurt us, but one day they will help us. Before the easy use of paper to take notes, people would work on there memory using imaginary and cathedrals. I know from learning lines, you can remember vast amounts of information, but it is quickly lost. I also know that I could BS poetry if I got into the habit. Just remember the high points.
