I just love presuming things about computer problems.  Like the problem MUST be a hard drive, or a memory module, only to find out that the video card's fan is no longer turning, and the chipset even with the finned heatsink and such, is still generating heat in excess of 100C when under load.  That would definitely explain why sometimes the video in some of my RTS games would just start to slow waaaaayyyyy down for no clear reason and then recover somewhat and then repeat that multiple times.
