So, if anyone took my advice regarding the Samsung HD753LJ 750GB drive for just over $100, so far it has been a relatively stable drive. Lots of people on Newegg have reported DOA drives, but when they got one that was solid, it has been working like a top. The only thing to REALLY be aware of is if you're using an nVidia chipset. You need to get into Device Manager then the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers (This is in XP, btw), then double click each one listed to find the SATA controller holding the drive. When you find it, remove the check mark for 'Enable command queuing'. That's what has been locking up the systems and causing funky errors on reboots.
