Sex offenders ushering in the way for a very real Big Brother

Unfuckingbelievable.

Now, not only are registered sex offenders forced to admit, and even 'outed' by the Sheriff's dept., but they get to be blessed with an ankle bracelet that is hooked up to a GPS tracking system.

We can't actually spend the money to help rehab these people, so they won't reoffend. It's just a lot easier to ensure they are stigmatized and ostracized and persecuted for the rest of their lives, not to mention invading almost any of their remaining privacies. Where are these things for burglars? I feel FAR more threatened by them. What about mass murderers that get off on technicalities, or get 'rehabbed' and released after only a few years, or whatnot? When will this bullshit end?

And why don't we just help each other sleep all the more.

Sex offenders (who's acts are based on a paraphillia) are not treatable, their desires can only be repressed, so rehab would be a waste of money. ...unless castration is part of the "rehab" I expect it would be as effective as making gay people straight, wich as I remember has never really worked.

First of all, all paraphilia means is 'sexually deviant behavior' that is often considered to be a mental illness. Maybe some of my kinks are that.

Second of all it's a gross generalization to say that all sex offenders are in fact not treatable and their desires can only be repressed. It rather depends upon the cause. There has been recent study to show that some sex offenders develop this behavior as a result of chemical imbalance, brain damage, or in some cases even tumours, and they have in fact been (entirely coincidentally) cured when these other problems were taken care of.

My basic point being -- even if the _majority_ of sex offenders can't be cured, that doesn't mean that you simply throw them all away into the dustbin to be lepers for the rest of their lives. What about the few that _can_?

Generalizations like this just exist to make one feel better about screwing over the few who really hold no blame for their actions just because it's more convenient and the many may be unable to be helped.

A far more troubling issue is that (say) being caught getting a consensual blow job in the woods from another adult male behind an interstate rest area puts one, in many jurisdictions, in the same sex offender category, with the same local reporting requirements, etc, as do far more severe crimes like raping and murdering little girls.

Incidentally, I agree with most of what you say here. Also, at least here in Arizona, whipping your dick out on the side of a highway to take a leak technically can make you a sex offender, just the same as raping a little boy or girl can. Which kind of undermines the whole point of having a special category for sex-related offenses.

now that's going a bit too far... I can see indecent exposure (whatever that means) but not being branded a sex offender for taking a piss in the bushes. Although Wisconsin law is not much beter.
