Huh, Cell Phones are no longer exempt
2004-Feb-24, Tuesday 11:35 amThe weirdest thing this morning.
I just got a text message to my cell phone telling me to call an 800 number if I wanted to lose 30 pounds in the first month. Christ, not even Cell Phones are exempt from this spamming bullshit anymore.

on 2004-Feb-24, Tuesday 03:44 pm (UTC)Here's a pony tip for all of you. All telemarketers are required by law to keep a "Do Not Call List". The first step is to ask their name, and repeat it. Ask their company, and repeat it. Then request to be placed on their "Do Not Call List". When finishing the conversation, call them by name. Here is how the conversation should go:
You: Who are you, again?
Them: My name is Bob.
You: And what is your company, Bob?
Them: The bank of Montreal
You: Okay, Bob, can you place me on your "Do Not Call List"?
Them: Yes, sir.
You: Okay, thank you, Bob.
When you repeat their name back, they know for certain you know who they are and what company they work for. They have 2 weeks time to stop calling you. If you suspect they aren't going to put you on the "Do Not Call List", then you can say, in addition to what is above, "Okay, I'm making a note of your name, your company name, and today's date, that I've requested to be placed on your 'Do Not Call List'." When you say that, they will usually get defensive and start telling you THEIR rights (that they have two weeks time to comply, etc). But if you do this for each telemarketer, eventually they won't call you anymore.
