and I'm still in awe.

Sometimes, the most amazing things can happen, in the most mundane circumstances. Last weekend, my parents were in town. For those that know me, and the rather sordid history of my parents, it was not a happy-fun tim in my life. And, this was something I agreed to on a whim, due to duty, and out of some small aspect of genuine curiosity.

We piled into the rented semi-luxury car, which I termed an 'Old Man Car' and gave my father shit about driving. He laughed and fed it right back. Dad is still a fairly cool person, despite his views on homosexuality. We made it to Chef Chu's, which is one of the best Chinese food places in the area, and had a very delicious and pleasant lunch.

Next, given the time, it was agreed there would be insufficient time to hold the original plan of getting up to SF for the day. So, instead we stuck around the South Bay. We ended up going to Winchester Mystery House. Many thanks to Bern for having shown it to me in the first place and having dragged me there for an entire day. The various tours are VERY enjoyable, and the house itself is ... well, it's frankly amazing. Sarah was a truly remarkable woman, even if she was completely insane (which isn't proven, just speculated by some).

The trip was .... wonderful. We talked. And we didn't just talk bullshit, or chicken shit. We talked about them, what they're up to. The family, and how various relatives are doing. We talked about me and my work ... situation. And not once was there any evidence of covert or repressed hostility or any unsubtle jibes being poked at 'filthy fags'. It was just like the house. Amazing.

As I said to someone right after the event, it completely shattered my worldview of them. And I'm still staggered by it.

I've always said that I don't really need 'Family' in my life, because that's obligation based on blood, history and circumstance, not on caring. I would very much like Friends I'm Related To in my life, however. That's the distinction here. They actually seemed to want to be friends. What a fucking concept. And despite my own misgivings about some of the methods being used, they are still fairly active and still living lives.

Miracles..

From time to time, even the strangest of things happen; our parents surprise us. If we're lucky, it happens sooner than later..but, it's good to hear that it's happened for you, finally. I only hope it's not just a flash in the pan. Hopefully they'll keep it up, and you'll find some new friends. :-)

And odd as it may seem now, I honestly think that would be .... good.
