Finally. Fucking finally.
2004-Jun-15, Tuesday 11:03 pmOk. So, it turns out the idle jets on the carb got gummed up somehow. Most likely a heap of crap that broke loose that didn't come totally clean with the first soaking in Dip-It. This time, with a second soaking in pure dipit, with a nice happy brass brushy thing, and suddenly all my engine troubles are gone. Granted, I forgot to get the stupid secondary cylinder spring rewound, since it popped free when I broke it down for cleaning, but even now, it seems to be handling things just fine. Hopefully it'll carry through tomorrow, and I'll be able to pass emissions testing without an issue. Oh yes. Matt also got the idle mixture screw exposed from the metal housing it was in, and we set it today to have a good, slightly lean, smooth mixture at a lower idle. Helps to optimize gas efficiency. That'll need to be futzed with as more of the original, correct vacuum and emissions/environmental stuff gets back online, but for now, it's running very smoothly.
Here's hoping no other little nuggets of joy crop up with the car for a few weeks. That'll be a relief.
Checklist of things to do sooner than later:
___Fuel Filter to help prevent repeat occurences of the clogged jet thing (It's a reach, yeah, I know, but it's worth the $3 for the filter)
___Vacuum system - replace the metal lines after dipping them for ... about a year. That's dependent on getting a good solid snapshot or 5 of the existing vacuum system, since I have zero idea where those hoses will all go, unfortunately. Duty solenoids, charcoal cannister.
___Get the final pieces of extra stuff that are still due - spare tire, muffler, repaired tranny with good synchro's.
___Recheck the mixture levels at idle, and the idle times with vacuum system in place.
___Check computer connections for electrical connections, to verify what is happening with the trip computers, which are electrical, why the temperature sensor 'had' to be replaced as it was 'acting funny'.
___Find the damn revolution sensor to determine what might have failed with the original fuel relay system. Repair the problem, and undo the jury rigged system in place now.
More to come.
