That assumes, most of the time, guns are supposed to be used for something other than killing something.

I'm not sure I follow the analogy you're making. A pencil has a singular purpose when created: making graphite lines on paper and other surfaces. A gun has a singular purpose when created: holding and discharging bullets from cartridges.
