Sirs,

I find the notion that the President of a country founded on the Separation of Church and State preaches his own religion and morality on national television to be wholly and unabashedly deplorable. All men are created equal. The Founding Fathers didn't seem to mind homosexuals in the original documents and ideals of the country, why are you taking it on yourselves to help clarify this 'oversight' on their part?

One of the key arguments I've been presented with on this issue is that without this amendment, marriage would be redefined forever, and it needs to be protected. My main questions are first and for most, what are you protecting it from? What does it need protection from? There seems to be no legal nor even moral argument other than pure elitism and intolerance that engenders this statement.

Further, one must ask why the definition of marriage, which has already undergone several revisions through the history of man, should be so selected to be excluded from the list of ideals and institutions that have been redefined. Equal rights for women and minorities has been a long, hard fight for those groups. Why then are the ultra conservatives so staunch in their need to live in the past? By fighting so very hard to retain an archaic definition that even other countries have rejected now, are they then sending the message that many of the other advances we've made through our rather short history as Americans should also be reverted to their original definitions?

I think it high time that the legislature actually start to focus on running the country, at the macro level, rather than taking such an overt and gross interest in what goes on behind closed doors. The Patriot Act was an enormous blow to our rights and freedoms. Let's make that trend stop rather than accelerating it into even more invasive restrictions on our liberties to love who we want, and enjoy equal protection under law.
