The problem I have with "news" sites like that is; Unless I'm willing to track down some corroborating evidence on my own, how can I just blindly take that report as fact?

Well, I think there's a deeper problem here. And that's the nature of news and reporting in this country, and most likely globally.
Something like this will spring up on the AP newswire, and several sources will tap that same originating source, with and without crediting it to said. Therefore, even with corraboration of other sites, that doesn't really do much other than respew the same facts. Of course, that doesn't preclude the secondary source doing their own followup for proof and reassurance to the readership, but still.

Would it be exceptionally bitter or sad if I say that if Bush is re-elected it would be no major issue?

And if he makes errors - even more than he is already (it seems) - the religious / self-righteous population who put him there will have no choice but to realize the error of their ways. It is the only way to enlighten those who have the blinders of "faith".
It is rather distasteful but I have enough skills, in a large variety of jobs descriptions, that I (believe) I can survive a poor economy. If others wish to run this situation into the ground I believe I can "sit back" and wait for the fallout.
Yes, that may seem quite hateful. But Americans often end up with the exact government they so richly deserve.
