I have decided that QFC is definitely the place to shop up here.
Yesterday, I accidentally left a bag of meat at the self-checkout station because I had a lot of bags and missed the one. I went in tonight to cash in again on their huge deal of 1.99/lb for boneless, skinless chicken breasts, and asked the rather cute guy behind the register. He ran in back, and came trotting back out with the bag. Whoa. That's just amazing.
Also, their cashiers, and clerks don't look like they've been there for a decade and a half in the last 8 hours. They're generally agreeable, if not outright happy, and definitely pleasant. They seem like they actually want to be there.
Oh, yeah. They also have free Internet access with RJ45 jacks next to their tables in their little cafe thing. Also they have a wonderful magazine selection. I just can't find anything overtly wrong with this place.

on 2003-May-13, Tuesday 11:00 am (UTC)Now, it's probably true that Safeway mandates this level of friendliness in its workers and hires secret shoppers to go in and make sure that Safeway employees follow the script to the letter. But I go in there 2-3 times a week. They must know I'm not a spy, yet they're still nice to me and make general chitchat with altogether fast service. This has been true at the three different Safeways I've lived near so far.
Albertsons, on the other hand, is dismal. I'm lucky if there's one checkout stand open at any given time and I'm grateful if there aren't 5 people with huge baskets waiting in front of me. The people there do their job, but not with any vigor. The aisle organization is haphazard, and the atmopshere of the place makes me feel ill at ease.
Safeway costs a tad more than Albertsons, but I'd certainly go to Safeway. I dunno what your experiences were like with the two when you lived here, tho.
