From scratch, yet again
2010-Jul-23, Friday 08:39 amSo, courtesy of jumping over to an ATI video card, and a few other ... oddities (namely that virus I mentioned before), I opted yesterday to do a full rebuild onto a 1.5TB drive of my home system. (There were very bizarre graphics lockups that were occurring at random, so yes, I felt it was justified.) So far, overall, it's been a smooth process. Got my XP install up and running again, and got the Win7 running. Even got my Ubuntu 10.4 running properly again as well, all on separate partitions and the like. It makes me happy. :) Now to just get my old drive back up and running a bit longer to get a few backups of current data (Firefox, Thunderbird, etc.) and then I'll be able to reformat it and harvest the space as the secondary drive in either the server or the media center. All in time that I can focus on homework for the next couple of days rather than futzing about with the system and letting it distract me from the important crap.
Oh, yes, before I forget. Since I'm 'only' using Home Premium Win7 64bit, apparently I'm not 'good' enough to have the feature of 'Making files available offline', according to MS. So, I got the SyncToy installed and up and running, to finally keep my local documents folder synched up with the copy on the server. This way I can have all the Library features up and running by having the data locally, and can have the documents and whatnot available on the server finally for backup and redundancy. Workarounds are good when necessary, but come on MS. The only significant difference between Home Premium and Pro is that you can log into a domain/AD with Pro. That DOESN'T mean home users don't use servers for their data and such. There's just no need for a domain/AD controller for the average home user.
EDIT: Wow! So, having spoken up spelled my own doom on this apparently. Turned out that the motherboard and at least one of my 'good' memory modules (yes, they're quite high end) was bad. New mobo obtained and two modules, currently, uninstalled. But this time for the rebuild, I went ahead and used my single Win7-64 Pro license to get the offline file sync capability.
