I just did a quickie rebuild of my main system.

I figured out how to make sure that XP stays bootable on a multi-boot system with Win7, where Win7 gets a HUGE partition at the start of the drive, and XP gets a much smaller partition much later in the drive. So, yay about that.

I also discovered that it wasn't the 64-bit install of MS that was causing all my video lockup woes, nor was it the version of PowerDVD I was/am using. While there might be some incompatibilities here and there, overall, 64-bit Windows and Linux continue to move forward relatively happily. No, it was indeed my motherboard, since I've had a few video/audio system lock ups since the reinstall, two notably happening when NOTHING was going on in the system other than usual background stuff.

So, now, the long, long, long, annoying series of upgrade purchases to get me off the Core2 platform.

I'm thinking seriously about heading down the rabbit hole of AMD this time. I love the numbers Intel can put up, but the cost differential, especially with similarly outfitted mobo's, is somewhat substantial. Plus, they do have that Phenom 6 core delight for about 1/3 the cost of the Intel hexcore..... Hrm. Decisions decisions.
