Gay cinema for the very modest win?
2011-Jun-15, Wednesday 09:33 pmSo, I just watched Cthulhu. That's the name of it, yep. And it's by a gay production company. Some of their previews were rather intriguing too -- we'll see. :) Anyway! I had no idea it was a gay flick, at all. I just wanted to see what sort of treatment they'd give the genre. Well, it wasn't an especially polished flick, unfortunately. Seems that gay cinema is still very much in the indie circuit, so there were some ... missed chances at creepier framing, shots, effects, and sound/foley. But overall, it was a rather decent effort at a genre pic, MUCH nicer than most other genre-style movies with gay protagonists than I'd seen recently. Of course the main hero character made the one critical mistake you never EVER do in a CoC type feature: he fucked a local. BIG mistake. Even if the local was amazingly cute. Anyway, it's a pretty good recommend. It's not nearly on par with In the Mouth of Madness or such, but it's tough to compete with Carpenter. It is however a much better effort than one might expect. And the ending was especially amusing. Not to mention all the ...... ummmm, I guess one who hadn't read any of the Lovecraft/Lumley fiction before would call them dream sequences interspersed with the main flow really adding to the surreal feel of the entire film.
