Stephen Colbert's It Gets Better video.

I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad he pointed out that they're just words in this video. Just words. If you don't LET them hurt, they won't hurt. Words are just airy vocalizations of specific form. It's the intent of the speaker AND the empowerment by the listener that 'matters' for meaning, nothing else. Kids are shits, and exceedingly cruel in many ways parents try and gloss over. It's part of our tribal/pack-centric nature to pull this shit. It happens, and it's wrong and hurtful and damaging. But it happens. But I think Stephen's message is one that's even more important for parents. Don't try and shield little Thomas, Richard, or Harrison from the bullying. TEACH them how not to be bullied. Not necessarily by violent reprisal, but by simply understanding that the words have no value unto themselves, and that they're just showing their own pathetic insecurities when they do such a thing.
